LARA Spring Newsletter 2012

Welcome to the Spring 2012 LARA newsletter.

The LARA quiz night - Thanks to everyone who came along to the LARA quiz night in February at the White Hart it was a full house and a great night. Due to popular demand we will be hosting another quiz night in October and will keep you posted on that. We might have to look for a bigger venue as its reputation grows and the neighbourhood competition heats up!…maybe we should even get a trophy! You can see photos from the last quiz posted on the LARA website - http://laran16.blogspot.co.uk/

The LARA Lunch  - We have our 3rd annual summer picnic which now has been confirmed to take place on Sunday September 16th in the gardens of the West Hackney Recreation Ground. This year we are running the event alongside the Hope not Hate great British street party campaign. Nothing to do with the Olympics and nothing to do with the Coronation you will pleased to hear! The event kicks off at (12.30 -  4pm) There will be events throughout the afternoon for the children and the adults including the LARAlympics more information to follow! Put the date in your diary. Everyone is invited to the LARA Lunch – its completely free. Bring something delicious to eat, drink and share. Meet your neighbours and spend a lazy Sunday afternoon together.

Updates on current issues in the area are as follows:

  • Since complaints were made about the Mount Strive nightclub LARA had a meeting with the manager and he has since kept up his efforts to make people leave quietly. Informing his doorman as well as putting up signs outside the venue.

  • Café Mostra late license application was denied on similar concerns to late night disturbances. LARA have been in discussions with the management advising that they apply for temporary licenses for special events. Café Mostra have a wealth of activities taking place there over the summer so please visit their website or the venue for more information.

  • One of the neighbours has raised concerns of an uneven footpath on Bayston Rd on the corner of Tyssen rd, which is causing difficulties with elderly residents. LARA has sent a letter to LB Hackney streetscene to address this problem and we will let you know when we get a response.

  • The Wilmer Place developers are back! After their initial proposal to develop the Wilmer Industrial Estate into a Sainsburys supermarket faced much local opposition last autumn they have now announced their revised scheme and have contacted LARA to arrange a meeting with residents to brief them on their new proposal. This meeting has been scheduled for June 12th 2012. More news to follow, please check the LARA blog for an update … There will be a public exhibition of the revised proposals available to view on site at 195 – 201 Stoke Newington High Street on May 29th from 12pm to 8pm.

  • LARA attended the 2nd May CAP (Community Advisory Panel & the police Safer Neighbourhoods Team) meeting, and contributed to set the priorities for the local community police for the next three months.  The police acknowledged that muggings around the Brooke Road and Bayston Road area are a serious concern and it was set as one of their three priorities, the other two priorities for the local community police are:  cycling on pavements and drink and disorderly behavior. The local community police also informed us that they are bidding for resources so that they can patrol the area until the early hours of the morning.

Welcome to the Leswin Area Residents Association (LARA) January / February newsletter 2012.

Happy New Year to all Leswin Area residents. We hoped you enjoyed the festive season. The January and February months are always a bit of a come down after Christmas so we have decided to try and raise everyone’s spirits by hosting a LARA quiz night fundraiser upstairs at The White Hart. The event takes place on Wednesday February 1st and is open to all LARA residents and friends. Bring a house team along or just bring yourselves and teams will be arranged on the night. We hope it will be a fun way to meet fellow residents and join in with a spot of friendly competition. See more details below.

Current issues brought up at the last committee meeting are as follows:

Residents Safety Issues - LARA attends Community Advisory Panel (CAP) meeting with local police to put forward our residents concerns on safety in the area.  We now have a representative in the panel Anne Towndrow. In the January meeting on Wednesday 11th the Safer Neighbourhood's Police team set as one of its three priorities for the next three months the growing number of muggings in and around Brooke Road and Bayston Road, as well as the growing number of dangerous cyclists on pavements in the High Street. Tackling anti social behavior along the High St and Church St was also set as a priority.  They will also patrol Leswin Place more often where young adults and adolescents are hanging out and disturbing the neighbours.

COMMUNITY ADVISORY PANEL - If you'd like to help set the priorities for the police's Safer Neighbourhoods Team , why not come along to the Stoke Newington Community Advisory Panel  ( C A P ) which is attended by residents, council officers and the Safer Neighbourhoods Team.

The next meeting is at 7.30 p m on Wednesday 13th March at :

Yorkshire Grove Community Hall
Yorkshire Grove Estate
Gunstor Road
N16 8HF

If you can't attend the meeting you can still give your views online by going to StokeNewingtonCentral.snt@met.police.uk and completing a short survey or send your safety concerns to LARA's email lara.n16@googlemail.com and we will raise them for you so that they are set as priority for the Safer Neighbourhood Team!

Traffic Calming Works to take place in Leswin Area – After concerns for road safety were raised by LARA, Hackney Council have proposed traffic calming measures to take place in our area - well done LARA! Information on proposed changes was circulated last week. For more information you can check the LARA blog.

Together For Transport - is running a campaign to keep Hackney Stations Staffed. A government report is recommending to close ticket offices at Hackney Wick, Homerton, Rectory road Stamford Hill and Stoke Newington Stations and cutting ticket office staff at Hackney Central, Dalston Kingsland and Clapton.   Visit their website for further information on this threat and for finding out how to get involved in the campaign against this proposal.   www.togetherfortrnasport.org.  The next public meeting is on Tuesday 28 February 6:30 at Homerton Library, Homerton High St. London E9.

While we are lucky enough to live in a relatively safe neighbourhood, if and when someone in the neighbourhood needs some help, advice and / or support LARA is here as an association that can help put residents in touch with the relevant local contacts.

We are still keen on getting as many of the residents signed up to this newsletter as possible so at least the majority of the people in the area are aware of current issues that are being discussed in the neighbourhood, whether this is to do with planning developments in the area, any local crime  / nuisance issues and of course more positive aspects such as local exhibitions, local public celebration events etc. If you have friends in the area who are yet to sign up please encourage them to do so at lara.n16@googlemail.com

I hope you find our updates helpful and informative and if you have something to add please do not hesitate to get in contact with us.

Hopefully we will see you at the Quiz night.

LARA Committee.

Welcome to the Leswin Area Residents Association (LARA) December newsletter 2011.

Christmas greetings to all Leswin Area residents. We hope you are getting in to the Christmas spirit? I hope you find our updates helpful and informative and if you have something to add please do not hesitate to get in contact with us.

Current issues brought up at the last committee meeting are as follows:

·      Sainsbury’s campaign: Following a wave of protest, Sainsbury’s and  developer Newmark Properties have announced they are not going to submit their original plans for a giant supermarket in the heart of Stoke Newington. Instead, they are going to hold a second ‘public consultation’, before submitting revised plans.  Our concern, of course, is that the revised plans will just be more of the same with a few tweaks. So along with Stokey Local (whose campaign LARA has joined), we will be calling for a genuine consultation, keeping a close eye on developments, and will keep you posted.

·      West Hackney Recreation Ground Project has their inaugural Annual General Meeting on Monday January 30th at St. Paul's Church Hall. 7.30pm start. Everybody welcome.

·      A complaint was raised to us about excessive noise coming from customers leaving the Mount Strive nightclub on a number of occasions this month. On behalf of LARA we sent a letter and met with the nightclub owner and are pleased to say we had a constructive and cordial meeting. The owner stressed that he had put some nights on recently that brought in a younger audience and had received complaints about noise of customers leaving the club on these nights. He also had other difficulties with these young customers and has decided from now on to only put on nights aimed at an older clientele. Also he has agreed to get his doormen to encourage the customers to leave quietly. Lets hope this reduces the noise problems. Only time will tell.  Meanwhile a recent license application has been put forward by Cafe Mostra to extend their licensing hours to 2am on Friday and Saturdays. Café Mostra is close to the Mount Strive nightclub on the corner of Tyssen Road and Stoke Newington High Street. Find out more here:
-

·      Another issue raised this month was a scam involving a stocky-looking guy in a high-viz jacket knocking on a residents door, apparently rather agitated, he said he was doing some work on the high street and they had gone through a gas pipe and didn't know how many houses were affected. The resident was asked to run the tap to check the gas supply was OK? The resident went down to the kitchen and did as he asked. By the time the resident got back to the door, having shouted back that the gas was fine, he was gone. And so, as it turned out, was the resident’s iPhone. While this may be an isolated event LARA recommends you request ID from anyone who comes to your door in these situations and to not leave your door unattended to strangers.

·      Join forces to protect Hackney’s local railway stations from staffing cuts. There is a public meeting, organised by Hackney Unites on Monday 12 December, at 6.30pm at the Old Fire Station, 61 Leswin Road N16 7NX.

This will be an opportunity to hear about the government’s ‘McNulty Report’ and its recommendations which if carried through will see the closure of ticket offices at six of the borough’s railway stations and reductions at a further three (the government is also planning above inflation fare increases). Bring your friends and bring your ideas about how we can create a voice for passengers in the borough.

The meeting is supported by the N16 Magazine: http://www.n16mag.com/news/latest-news/974.html

-          LARA’s next event and fundraiser: A quiz night held at The White Hart on Wednesday 1st of February. More details to follow but please get it in your diary it would be great to see you there. Everybody welcome.

-          Date for next committee meeting: Monday 5th January.
